Regional Extreme Weather Shelter
The Regional Extreme Weather Shelter (REWS), is a nightly shelter that occurs on days with extreme winds, freezing temperatures, or multiple days of rain. Our coordinator will "call" a REWS night by 12:00 pm of that day and will put the word out that it is happening. We contact people through street outreach, Facebook posts, a bright orange sandwich board located on the corner of 9th and F streets, and a phone tree to local service agencies.
Each REWS night, Arcata House Partnership provides showers, new clothes, dinner/breakfast, and sleeping bags for the night. Each Shelter is held at a local church, who provides a safe, dry, place for the houseless to stay for the night. Volunteer chaperones stay overnight at the church, ensuring everyone's safety and answering any questions that may arise.
Each REWS night costs $450.00 to run, and we rely on the donations of community members to provide this service to the community. We are grateful to our churches, volunteers, and community donors for their help and support. If you are interested in donating, volunteering, or seeing how your faith congregation can become involved, contact us at (707) 822-4528.
