The Gift of Reading from Troop 90020

Junior Girl Scouts from Northern California Troop 90020 brought the gift of reading to families at the One Stop in June, 2019.  The project was in partial fulfillment of requirements for the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest award Junior Scouts can achieve.  The girls researched needs in their community, and chose to help children who had no homes and no TV’s.

“Books help children not be bored.  They can pretend they are on adventures and they can learn things,” the girls explained.  This gift is ongoing, as the girls will continue to bring books to replace ones that are taken away.  “It is encouraging people to read, and that will help them do better in their school work,” they continued.

The Scouts are grateful to Arcata Exchange for the donation of the bookshelf to hold the books, and to the Hospice Shop for donating the books to stock the shelves, making this a real community project.
