Shelters

Extreme Weather Shelter

When Humboldt weather gets bad, we’re here to make sure you have a safe place to go. The Extreme Weather Shelter opens during severe conditions, like freezing temperatures, heavy rain, or high winds, offering a safe space to protect against potentially life-threatening weather.

Criteria

  • Currently Homeless

  • No Screening Criteria

Prioritization

  • Severity & Urgency of Need

The Extreme Weather Center may be activated based on numerous factors including AHP’s capacity to operate and current shelter bed availability: when temperatures drop to 34°F or below, 36°F or below with rain, wind speeds exceed 30 mph (or create a wind chill of 34°F), or in cases of heavy rainfall—one inch or more or multiple days of rain.

Adult & Family Shelters

Our adult and family shelters, located at four sites in Arcata, offer a stable place to stay while you work toward permanent housing. Unlike night-to-night shelters, our sites are made to support you and help you get back on your feet.

The housing process here isn’t first come, first served; instead, it’s based on need. When you come to the Annex, we’ll talk with you and learn more about your situation. We offer to put your information into Coordinated Entry in HMIS, a software used to coordinate services and prioritize assistance. People with the highest need are added to a priority list. Each week, a committee, which includes the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and city members, reviews the list and decides who gets help first.

During your stay, we connect you to important resources, including medical care and housing assistance, and help you get essential documents like IDs and birth certificates.
