Understanding Your Role as a Volunteer

At Arcata House Partnership, volunteers play a critical role in supporting individuals facing homelessness. The work can be challenging, and the people we serve have complex needs. It’s important to approach volunteering with compassion, respect, and a clear understanding of our values.

Our Guiding Principles

  • Housing First – Everyone deserves housing, no matter their circumstances. Stable housing is often the first step toward recovery and stability.

  • Harm Reduction – We support individuals without judgment, recognizing that progress looks different for everyone.

  • Client Independence – People experiencing homelessness are the experts in their own lives. Our role is to support, not control, their journey.

  • Confidentiality – Respecting privacy is essential. If you recognize someone or learn sensitive information, it must remain confidential.

You’ll be working with individuals who may be in crisis, navigating trauma, or struggling with daily survival. This work requires patience, empathy, and an open mind.

If you ever feel overwhelmed or unsure, our staff is here to guide and support you.
