AHP Celebrates Shelter Expansion

Arcata House Partnership (AHP) recently celebrated an exciting milestone with a ribbon-cutting event marking the completion of construction on our Encampment Resolution Fund-funded adult shelter expansion!

This project represents an important step toward expanding shelter capacity and creating additional options for people experiencing homelessness in Humboldt County. As our community continues to face housing challenges, we know that one approach to shelter does not work for everyone. Providing a range of options helps us better respond to the different circumstances, needs, and barriers people may face.

The new expansion features individual, non-congregate sleeping units, offering greater privacy than traditional shared sleeping spaces. Each unit includes a bed and two storage totes for personal belongings, giving participants a designated space to rest and keep their essential items. ADA-compliant bathrooms are located centrally to support accessibility.

These units will allow AHP to better accommodate couples and individuals who may be medically fragile, have accessibility needs, or otherwise struggle to live comfortably in congregate shelter environments. Having a private sleeping space can make a meaningful difference for people who need additional flexibility and support to access shelter.

With construction complete, we are preparing to transition current shelter participants from congregate sleeping areas into the new individual units. This transition will help us put the new space into use while continuing to serve people experiencing homelessness in our community.

Access to shelter will continue through AHP’s existing intake and waitlist process. Individuals seeking adult shelter should visit the AHP Annex One-Stop at 501 Ninth Street in Arcata. The intake and waitlist procedures remain the same as those used for our existing adult shelter.

We are grateful to the Encampment Resolution Fund and everyone who helped bring this project to completion. This expansion is more than a construction milestone; it represents a commitment to creating shelter options that recognize the diverse needs of the people we serve.

As we prepare to welcome participants into these new spaces, we look forward to seeing how this additional capacity can help us provide more flexible, responsive support to our community.

More space, more options, and another step toward meeting our community’s need for shelter.
