For the fourth year in a row, Arcata House Partnership (AHP) is partnering with Arcata Elementary School for SOCKTOBER, a month-long sock drive benefiting our unhoused neighbors!

Throughout October, classrooms set their own collection goals and work together to gather socks for people experiencing homelessness in our community. At the end of the school year, the winning class earns a special prize: the honor of naming our beloved sock monkey mascot! It’s a fun tradition that encourages teamwork, friendly competition, and a whole lot of generosity.

These conversations help students see that homelessness isn't something that only happens to other people. A job loss, a medical emergency, r

ising housing costs, or other unexpected circumstances can make it difficult for someone to keep a stable home. By learning about these challenges early, students have an opportunity to build empathy and recognize the importance of caring for all their neighbors.

Socks are one of the most frequently needed items at AHP, providing warmth, comfort, and protection for people who may spend much of their day outdoors. Thanks to the enthusiasm of Arcata Elementary students, this annual drive helps us meet a practical need while strengthening our connection with the next generation of community members.

We’re grateful to Arcata Elementary for continuing this partnership and for teaching students that even small acts of generosity can make a meaningful difference.

Every pair counts, and every neighbor matters. Thank you to all the students, teachers, and families who make SOCKTOBER such a special tradition!
