You Don’t Need a Home to Vote: Every Neighbor Deserves a Voice

Being unhoused does not mean being without a voice. People experiencing homelessness have the right to participate in our democracy, yet many face barriers to registering and voting, including confusion about address requirements, limited access to information, and other practical challenges.

At Arcata House Partnership (AHP), we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to make their voice heard. Housing, homelessness, and access to essential services are important community issues, and the people most directly affected deserve the opportunity to participate in the decisions that shape their lives.

On October 16, AHP hosted a voter engagement event at our 60-unit affordable housing site to encourage residents to participate in the voting process. Thanks to the efforts of our staff and the participation of residents, we had a great turnout and helped community members register to vote. We’re excited to celebrate this effort and grateful to everyone who helped make the event a success!

This work is part of a broader effort to make voting more accessible and to ensure that housing status is not mistaken for a barrier to civic participation. The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s Our Homes, Our Votes campaign provides nonpartisan resources to help housing organizations encourage voter registration, voter education, and participation in elections. The National Alliance to End Homelessness also offers its Every One Votes toolkit, with guidance to help service providers support the voting rights of people experiencing homelessness.

Importantly, people do not need a permanent home address to register and vote. Specific requirements vary by state, and people who are unsure how to register can seek guidance from their local election office or consult Vote.gov’s guide to voting while unhoused.

At AHP, we know that building a stronger community means more than providing housing and services. It also means creating opportunities for people to be heard, participate, and help shape their future.

Your housing status does not define your voice. Every neighbor deserves the opportunity to participate. We’re proud of our staff and residents for making this event a success, and we look forward to continuing to support accessible, nonpartisan voter engagement throughout our community.
